Effective supervision allows a therapist to develop their own strengths, while practicing in a safe, ethical and professional manner. It limits professional isolation and offers a calm, reflective space in which we can consider every aspect of our work.
If you are just starting out in Private Practice you will want an experienced supervisor to support you as you expand your client base and flourish. Somewhere to consider all aspects of your new venture, as well as exploring and developing your work with clients.
All of us, however experienced, need supervision as a reflective space in which to consider our therapeutic work, it's impact on our clients and on us. A chance to have an experienced colleague hear our difficulties, successes, fears and gaps in knowledge. To receive positive affirmation for all we put in, and clarity about what or how we can change when things go wrong.
I believe my role is to protect the client through offering their therapists' containment and support, teaching when relevant, inviting reflection, maintaining clear boundaries and awareness of ethical practice. I aim to ensure that supervisees' understand what to do if there are any risks to the client or, via their client, to the community.
To do this I use a contractual agreement for both the practical arrangements and ethical aspects e.g. times, fees, confidentiality. I will aim to work with you at your level of competence, using your own working modality. I will be interested to hear the problem you present, set in the context of your work, case formulation, treatment intention and goals. While the focus is often client work, I will encourage you to talk of how you look after your own well being, particularly if you are working with a complex or threatening client group.
I have many years of experience as a UKCP registered supervisor, and am also an accredited EMDR Consultant/Supervisor.
I supervise qualified counsellors and psychotherapists in private practice, the NHS, charitable organisations, and local Universities. I also offer consultation to other professionals e.g. nurses, medical and allied staff, psychologists, chaplains. These sessions can be taken individually or in collegial groups. This is a calm and positive place in which to consider your psychotherapy and counselling work with clients in a reflective way, and to think about your own needs as a practitioner.
More focused sessions are offered for those seeking EMDR supervision, or wanting to work towards accreditation or their own consultancy.
